Verizon was the first US carrier to make a big push into 5G network technology. Its rival AT&T has had 5G almost as long, but customers still can’t buy 5G devices on AT&T’s network. Verizon, meanwhile, is loading its lineup with as many 5G phones as possible. Now, you can find out exactly where your Verizon 5G phone will work thanks to a . Spoiler: the answer is “almost nowhere.” The global 5G rollout is still in its infancy, but US carriers are in a tough spot. Many of the mid-band frequencies that are perfect for are reserves for government and regulatory functions.
Carriers around the world are working to roll out 5G networks, and they hope to connect not just phones but also smart home devices, wearables, and cars. Your next car might have its own 5G connection, and tire-maker Pirelli wants to take advantage of that to make roads safer. It has developed a new sensor-studded tire that and shares that data with other cars over 5G. The idea is that a high-tech tire on your car would detect potentially hazardous road conditions, and beam an alert to nearby vehicles. In a demo, Pirelli’s “Cyber Tire” detected a potential hydroplaning risk and transmitted it to cars approaching that spot in the road.
Science fiction is full of examples of people entering suspended animation or hibernation during a long space journey, but that might not be fiction for much longer. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center are for the first time. There’s no spaceflight involved, though. Their use case is much more down-to-earth: saving trauma victims in the emergency room. The hospital has assembled a team to conduct the suspended animation experiment, but the rules governing the testing are understandably strict. Doctors aren’t just asking people off the street to go into medical hibernation, but people who arrive at the hospital with serious trauma like a gunshot or stab wound might undergo the procedure.

Supercomputing 19 (SC’19) has been in full swing this week, and AMD has made a number of high profile announcements at the event. There are new deals for Epyc with the EU and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, Amazon is planning to deliver Rome-based cloud computing instances, a pair of Microsoft Azure instances intended for HPC workloads are now available in preview mode, and a new version of ROCm, AMD’s Radeon Open Compute initiative, will roll out soon. The company also notched the first TOP500 win for Rome, using the AMD CPU. All in all, it’s a successful show for a company that didn’t have much to show at all just a few short years ago — but it’s comments by Forrest Norrod, GM of AMD’s Datacenter and Embedded Solutions Business Group, that catch the eye.
Many of today’s flagship Android phones have fantastic cameras, but the camera app on Google and Samsung phones reportedly shipped with a nasty bug that could have allowed malicious apps to . The companies didn’t know about the bug until earlier this year when researchers from Checkmarx alerted them. It’s a good thing, too. This could have been a huge mess if someone exploited it in the wild. The report from Checkmarx is a bit surprising because we’re not used to seeing Android bugs like this anymore. Google implemented a robust permission system in 6.0 Marshmallow, and it has been strengthening its controls in subsequent versions.

One of the most difficult problems facing first-world countries as they search for more environmentally sustainable manufacturing methods is the issue of fossil fuel use in heavy industry. According to a Bill Gates-backed startup, Heliogen, it’s solved a major problem with industrial manufacturing and developed solar technology that can replace the conventional fossil fuels often used in these types of manufacturing. Vox published a recent article on the problem of , and I’d recommend giving it a look as an overview of the problem as it exists today. Heavy industry accounts for roughly 22 percent of global CO2 emissions.
