Turn your brilliant Tasker tasks into stand-alone apps

You create the perfect task in Tasker... one that you use frequently, and that you may even want to distribute to other people or possibly sell. What's the next step?

You certainly don't want to spend time opening Tasker and running the task from within the app. And you definitely don't want to have to install Tasker on your coworkers' or friends' Android devices, and then set up the task manually.

Thankfully, the developers of Tasker created a handy extension called Tasker App Factory that allows you to create a stand-alone app from your Tasker tasks.

This means you can take that brilliant task and turn it into a launchable app from your home screen or app drawer.

Installing Tasker App Factory

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  2. Search for tasker app factory.
  3. Locate and tap the entry by Crafty Apps EU.
  4. Tap Install.
  5. Read the permissions listing.
  6. If the permissions listing is acceptable, tap Accept.
  7. Allow the installation to complete.

Once it's installed, don't bother looking for an app to launch, as this is an extension for the Tasker app.

Using Tasker App Factory

I assume you already have your Tasker task ready to export as an app. Before you run the export, you must make sure you have an icon set for the task; otherwise, the export will fail. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Open Tasker.
  2. Go to the Task tab.
  3. Tap the task you wish to export.
  4. In the lower left corner (Figure A), tap the square.
  5. Select an Image category.
  6. Locate a suitable image and tap to select.
  7. Tap the back button (top left corner) to go back to the Task tab.

Now that your task is ready to go, here are the steps to export it as a stand-alone app.

  1. Open Tasker.
  2. Go to the Task tab.
  3. Long press the task to be exported.
  4. Tap the menu button at the top right (three vertical dots).
  5. Tap Export.
  6. Tap As App.
  7. Wait for the export to complete.
  8. When prompted, tap the Android button in the bottom right corner of the popup (Figure B).
  9. When prompted, tap INSTALL.
  10. Tap DONE when the complete.
  11. Tap the check box in the popup window to end the process.
  12. Close Tasker.

The Tasker task is now a stand-alone app in your App Drawer. Tap it to run the task.

Sharing your apps

In order to share your apps, you need to use a file manager such as ASTRO or ES File Explorer. You'll find the exported apps in the Tasker/factory/kids folder. Now you can send the apps out via the file manager share system to as many people as you like (they do not have to install Tasker for the app to work).

This is one of the best hidden features of Tasker, which is saying a lot because the app has many outstanding features. If you're not making the most out of Tasker, you should jump on this special bandwagon today.
